A World Cup without conceding a goal
Together with his teammates, Zuberbühler played the 2006 FIFA World Cup without conceding a goal in regular play. After a 0-0 draw against France and two 2-0 wins against Togo and South Korea in the group stage, Switzerland advanced to the round of 16 as group winners. The match against Ukraine ended 0-0 after 120 minutes and had to be decided in a penalty shootout.
Zuberbühler was able to save the first spot kick by Ukrainian superstar Andriy Shevchenko. But in the end, Switzerland was eliminated 3-0 on penalties with no goals conceded in regular play. Zuberbühler still holds the record of conceding the fewest goals at a FIFA World Cup tournament.
The record holder turns 50
Last Friday, Pascal Zuberbühler celebrated his 50th birthday. The FIFA Museum took this occasion to announce a mini pop-up exhibition that tells the story of the record. The unsuspecting record holder was surprised with the announcement of the exhibition live on Swiss television.
