Zubi Talk with Arsène Wenger

For the fourth instalment of our live talk series Zubi Talk, which rounds off the programme for the year, Pascal Zuberbühler has a very special guest, who happens to have been his colleague at FIFA since 2019: Arsène Wenger. The legendary former Arsenal coach promises to offer a fascinating insight into the ins and outs of his work and projects as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development over the last two years.

One subject that is especially close to Wenger’s heart is talent development. As part of his commitment to giving every talent a chance, the Frenchman has put together a landmark programme aimed at helping FIFA’s member associations to improve their technical structures and roll out sustainable, long-term talent identification strategies.

The gulf between Europe and the rest of the world on the pitch has grown wider, as shown by the statistics from the last four editions of the FIFA World Cup™ and FIFA Women’s World Cup™. Wenger’s vision to address this involves enhancing fledgling players’ prospects by having more youth competitions, which are a breeding ground for talent, as well as developing more and better coaches.

Revamping the international match calendar – including holding the men’s and women’s World Cups every two years – is another of Wenger’s proposals to increase global competitiveness. A worldwide consultation process is under way on this front, with Wenger convinced that the decision to make the World Cups biennial would “give more teams the chance to qualify and more countries the opportunity to host a World Cup”.

Speaking of opportunities, this event is a golden chance to witness two bona fide football experts talking shop and exchanging views in the flesh.
