We caught up with FIFA Museum historian Guy Oliver, the author of the last three chapters, including the one on the 2022 World Cup, to find out more about his writing process, his abiding memories of the action in Qatar and how the book appeals to different audiences.
Guy, you have written the last three chapters of this book. What was your research process for the latest chapter?
It was very straightforward and, in my opinion, there’s only one way to do it right: to watch every second of the World Cup! When there were two games at the same time, I’d watch the second game as soon as the first one finished. Beyond TV coverage, I utilised the extensive statistics that FIFA provides, as well as looking at players’ histories and gauging public opinion. This immersive approach was crucial for understanding my subject matter thoroughly.
What were your highlights from the tournament?
What really captivated me was Morocco’s progress. I’ve been diligently following African football for a long time and to see an African team reach the semi-finals was amazing. England v. France stood out as possibly the best match to me, highlighting France’s emergence as a powerhouse. Their resilience really impressed me and their class was evident throughout, especially in crucial moments like their near triumph in the final.
Who would you recommend this book to?
Anyone who wishes to dive deep into World Cup history. With beautiful visuals that recreate the atmosphere of each tournament, it’s the perfect coffee-table book. It allows readers to immerse themselves in past tournaments and understand the zeitgeist of each era, making it suitable for a wide audience – including those curious about the World Cup in the lead-up to the next instalment in North America.
