FIFA Museum Welcomes Curaçao International Livano Comenencia after Historic FIFA World Cup Qualification
The FIFA Museum in Zurich warmly welcomed Livano Comenencia yesterday, as the FC Zürich defender and key figure in Curaçao’s historic qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ toured the exhibition. During his visit, the museum received the match-worn shirt he wore in the decisive qualifier against Jamaica.
Curaçao’s qualification story has quickly become one of world football’s most inspiring moments. With a determined 0–0 draw in Kingston on the final day of Concacaf qualifying, the island nation clinched first place in Group B and secured its first-ever World Cup appearance, becoming the smallest country by population and land area to reach the tournament. Comenencia’s performances were central to that success, including his standout showing and goal in the crucial 2–0 win over Jamaica earlier in the campaign.
At next year’s FIFA World Cup, Curaçao will face Germany, Ecuador and Côte d’Ivoire in a group that promises both excitement and tough competition. Looking ahead, Comenencia expressed his anticipation with a grounded sense of ambition: “Facing a team like Germany at a World Cup is something you dream about as a kid. We know their quality, but we believe in ourselves too. We’ll give everything we have and represent Curaçao with pride.”
During his tour through the FIFA Museum, Comenencia immersed himself in the rich heritage of the tournament his team has now joined. He appeared particularly captivated by the original FIFA World Cup™ Trophy, taking time in the World Cup Gallery to fully take in the ultimate prize he will compete for next year. To mark the visit, the defender presented the museum with the match-worn shirt he wore in the decisive qualifier against Jamaica, officially handing over a tangible piece of Curaçao’s sporting history to be preserved for future generations.
Following the official presentation of the object, FIFA Museum Director Marco Fazzone noted: “At the FIFA Museum, we don’t just celebrate and safeguard the past; we document history as it is being written. Livano’s shirt represents a fresh and incredible chapter in the global game. Receiving this object directly from him, shortly after the achievement, is a special moment for us and allows us to preserve Curaçao’s breakthrough as a part of football history.”
